Rapid Fire Coil Gun

Have a look at this cool rapid fire coil gun, it was created by the same guy that made this one.

“The Injector is a high power solenoid designed to push the projectiles out from the magazine into the coil breach. The armature/piston is made out of the same steel as the projectiles but of a slightly smaller diameter. The length is twice as long as the coil so that when the armature is magnetically sucked in to its max insertion point, there is > 1/4 length of armature protruding out of the injector coil. This 1/4 length of steel is what produces the work on the projectile.

The combination of armature, coil, spring, and housing mixed with pulsed voltage produces a hard hitting injector. The injection force must be strong to counter act the tension extered on the projectile from the magazine spring. The initial projectile speed must be fast to prevent jamming in the accelerator breach.

Materials:
* Coil 22 AWG magnet wire
* Steel armature core 5 cm x 0.5 cm
* Action Spring, music wire diameter 0.020″ – 0.025″ length 36″
* Birch Plywood 1/16 – 3/32 inch thick”

  1. May I suggest you try a lighter projectile (Try a piece of vehicle brake tubing for instance)

  2. No, you may not make that suggestion or any suggestions.

  3. Here’s a thought… Why not use the rapid fire mechanism to feed the coilgun? Rather than using a magnetically propelled push-rod to punch to projectiles out, you could use the same mechanism to feed the projectiles into the coilgun’s chamber, then use the coil to fire it out at silly speeds.

    Just an amature’s idea :D.

  4. Idiot… Learn to read the whole page before posting a reply, Jesus I’m a numbskull :(.

  5. have you built one of these yet that can achieve similar muzzle velocities as a gun? MORE POWER! (ape noises)

  6. New to the site, but had another theory for rapid fire coilguns that works sorta like the old NERF ball launchers, a parallel clip that feeds into the device from directly behind. All you’d need would be a pvc tube with any number of mechanisms to hold the ready projectile at the coil; you could even go so far as to use contacts that trigger the coils the instant the projectile is in place (and/or close a breech to keep the next in line from getting sucked through). Theoretically, you could go completely american overkill (ape noises) and have a secondary clip that feeds primary clips of projectiles into a secondary breech (I’ve actually tried this… unsuccessfully) that would allow large bursts of your desired projectile. The best way I’ve thought of to mechanically force your projectiles forward was an elastic/rubber band piston because it wouldn’t get thrown around by the field… though it had a tendancy to jam anyways.

    Or, if you use ball bearings as projectiles, you can just use a paintball style hopper. =P

  7. Hi Gid,

    Your idea reminds me of some factory screw guns that I saw a few years ago. they had a large metal hopper overhead and a PVC pipe that carried the screws single file into the screw gun. I am sure that idea could work well.

  8. try using lighter projectiles… like lead for example
