OpenMoko – World’s First Integrated Open Source Mobile Communications Platform

We have all seen the new Apple iPhone that was just released at CES. Now have a look at the new OpenMoko open source phone that has some similar sexy lines. The specifications sound impressive, what do you think?

Have a look at the presentation (PDF).

“Until now, mobile platforms have been proprietary and scattered. With the release of OpenMoko, which is based on the latest Linux open source efforts, developers now have an easy way to create applications and deliver services that span all users and provide a common “look and feel”. OpenMoko also offers common storage models and libraries for application developers, making writing applications for mobile phones fun and easy while guaranteeing swift proliferation of a wide range of applications for mobile phones. With such extremely high quality open frameworks, developers will be armed with exactly the tools they need to revolutionize the mobile industry.

  1. I expect to see good things from open Linux based cellphones. On thing that the iPhone supports that as far as I can tell the OpenMoko platform lacks is a multitouch capable interface (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multitouch).

  2. Oh my goodness, I am buying this phone!

  3. HI there…Very pretty work!
We are looking to make a Flash or similar (AIR?) on web screen dialer for a super cheap discount SIP type web calling service with lots of freebies like calling other dialer for free (and if possible, videopad to videopad for free-for people in Icafes, for example). We are looking for preferably a No Downloadables Dialer (sitting exclusively in a browser, Firefox&IE) where people can call by putting in a fresh pin#. We want to built using 100% Open Source. We want to adapt it into several non-English languages, above 128. Can somebody tell us where to find tools or even something someone was already done that we can adapt, please?
    Many many thanks!
