Complex Hacks

Botka, The Barely Standing Robot

Using a PIC microcontroller and a accelerometer this toy car has been turned into a fun balancing robot. About half way through the video the car is violently pushed back and forth, either the best recoveries were captured and displayed or the recovery code is very impressive! Here is a video of the car before all the refinements were put in. 🙂 Does anyone know if there is a

Cornell University ECE576 Advanced Microcontroller Final Projects

Bruce Land teaches a great course at Cornell University called Advanced Microcontroller Systems on a Programmable Chip (ECE576). This looks to be the big brother to this course. Bruce was kind enough to drop us a line to share the latest group of ECE576 Final Projects. They are all impressive but here are a few of my favorites. This is the Light Source Motion Tracking project. One thing to remember

RFID Proximity Security System

Here is final project from two Cornell students who researched, designed and implemented an RFID proximity security system. They decided to build a proximity security system as their student id cards supported both magnetic strip and RFID tags. Many of the controlled areas on campus were switching to proximity entry systems. The maximum range of their proximity card reader is about 1.5 to 2.0 inches from the antenna coil. There

Remote Controlled Camera from a Cellphone

Wow what a hack! SMS your hacked cell phone and it will take a picture and send it back to you! Have a look at the details of this Remote Controlled Camera from a Cellphone that uses a Picaxe microcontroller. I would dare anyone to try to take this onto a plane. I am sure the conversation would include “Honestly it is just a remote camera that looks like a

Mech Robot

Andres Bella has created a cool Mech Robot that is powered by a Parallax Microcontroller. “I used a Basic Stamp II microcontroller, is pretty easy to program, and it does everything I need for this project, I got a Power Started that is a very good power supply and gives me enough juice to power up all the electronics, the motors, and the compressor. The micro-controlled controls the solenoids valve

Autonomous Roboat Sailing the Irish Sea

The RoBoat team from Austria won the 2007 Microtransat. The France IBoat was a strong contender but had some technical difficulties. “The Microtransat is a transatlantic race of fully autonomous sailing boats. The race aims to stimulate the development of autonomous sailing boats through friendly competition. The Transatlantic race is currently planned for late 2008 with several smaller races taking place before then.”

ShakerRacer BlueTooth RC Cell Phone Car

Andreas Jakl developed the software and Stephan Selinger developed the hardware for the Shaker Racer at Symbian Resources. It reminds me of this RC Car Wiimote hack. Stephan sent in some pictures of the car hardware and some additional details. Thanks Stephan! “We are using an MSP430 microcontroller by Texas instruments on a board by www.olimex.com and the BlueNiceCom IV Bluetooth module. The microcontroller software is written in C.” Video
