Christmas Present Shake Prank

We all know a bunch of people who shake presents to try to guess what is inside them, I might also be guilty of that sometimes. Jason Smith from DIY Hacks and How-Tos sent in this cool Christmas Present Shake Prank that uses a Radio Shack recording module to record a sound that you would like to be played when the box is shaken. Some thin magnet wire is

Shy Light

Have a look at this fun project called the Shy Light. The light doesn’t like to be seen in public and uses a basket to hide in. X10 and two microcontrollers are being used to get the job done. “Why TWO Microcontrollers? The Dual-Microcontroller Circuit: Master (right) Slave (left) The Master Control microcontroller handles the foot-switch input, orchestrates the timing of the opening/closing of the basket (using commands to

Analog Clock Voltmeter

What is the voltage on a AA battery? It would be around 1:30PM if you were using this voltmeter! A PICAXE 18M2 microcontroller is used to read an analog value, calculate what time it represents and then uses a stepper motor to spin the adjustment knob to have the clock show the voltage using the hour and minute hands. 🙂 Read more about the Analog Clock Voltmeter “The max

Pulse Jet Kettle

We have seen some pulse jet builds before but this Pulse Jet Kettle has to be once of the funniest builds I have ever seen. You can see the kettle in operation at the 3:20 mark of the first video. It has an added bonus of waking up everyone in the house to get ready to have a cup of tea.  Via: Hackaday

Who said you need to upgrade your motherboard to get USB? Just buy this $100 adapter and magically upgrade your parallel port to USB. I wonder if it has drivers for the Windows 95 you have on the computer though. I guess another option would be to just purchase a used computer that has USB and 10 times the computing power for about half the price of the adapter.

Ping Pong Balls in Space

This Kickstarter will get 1000 Ping Pong Ball Projects into Space. Many of them will be student projects but there will be a bunch from non students so if you have a great idea you might be able to get it into space. There are some cool sponsorship levels such as getting a note into space and back for $10. I was wondering how many they recover since they

Ultrasonic Dog and Cat Deterrent Project

If you have been listening to security now with Steve Gibson for a few years you probably heard about the portable dog killer (listen from 57:46). Not sure if  Matt Meerian has listened to this Security Now episode but the Ultrasonic Dog and Cat Deterrent Project he sent in sure sounds similar to that project. Matt built this project to use on a bike to ward off dogs and
