Homemade RFID Reader

Why buy an off the shelf product if you can make it yourself. That is what some guys at Cornell University decided to do when they needed an RFID reader.

“For our final project, we designed and built (and exhaustively tested) an RFID-based proximity security system for use with Cornell Identification cards, which have been RFID-embedded since fall of 2003. The idea for this project was sort of spawned from our general interest in RFID technologies and the near-simultaneous occurance of Lab 2 (Keypad Security System) and the antiquated lock system at our fraternity house breaking.”

  6. we r doing a project on RFID .Quite inspired by ur homemade reader ckt n we would like
    to make own reader ckt.actually requesting u to help us in our things. can u please
    provide us with the basic reader circuit with components, becoz we tried at our level
    n could do nothing much than just random search.or at least provide us with the
    required information (reader circuit with comp,from where to avail the tag,) and any
    more information if u can.

  8. i have made the reader they have shown but im not still successful. the modulation from the rfid cards shows up but i have some problem with the later part of the circuit ingetting the modulation to be converted intostudents.also if someone has made this ckt and nice logic levels. anyways i m trying to sort it out . i think its some problem in my connections or ICs. good work cornell university students. also if someone has made this ckt and it works plz reply. the programming in the microcontroller atmga 32 is very cool and i have added many other facilities such as PIN code and LCD.

    I wanted to know what type of rfid tag and reader could be used for the following two uses.
    1. Employee login as the person passes through the door or gates
    2. Tagging all the books in a library and using a reader finding on which row,shelf and distance the book is at.

    Since I’m new to the concept of rfid,I dont know what frequency,type or memory is required and I really needed these details for a project.

  14. hii eby u can use passive tags for both purpose, for employee login the above project with tags in card form is best
    . for library book tracking you will have to use smaller tags may be in sticker forms, if u just want to implement rfid and not get into deeper electronics u can buy modules from various companies like hid ,atmel, microchip & many more you can find the one nearest to you

    I wanted to know whats the diiference between a 125KHz and 13.56MHz tag or reader.
    What is the significance of these frequencies? Does it determine what read range it can achieve?


  16. you can use either 125khz lowFID or 13.56mhz hiFID both have almost same read range. they are only the standards fixed by the industry , also read range depends on reader module power in case of passive tags, in both the frequencies you can achieve a read range of max, 6 inches, (plz check with reader module you are using), if you require more read range (12-18 inches) you can use active tags. there are many types of tags available, also different coding and modulation techniques..in reader modules also many types are available with different interfaces serial, LAN wigeand wifi etc.. so you hav to select the tag and reader accoring to the application , the frequency standard does not matter

    i have been trying to understand some specific RFID characteristics that i just can’t seem to grasp.
    can specific location details be acquired ou are the location details determined by the reader and it’s position. put in other words: does the signal actually tell you where the tagged object is or do you know because of where the reader is and so you can deduce that it is somewhere in that range…

    can an ID be redirected to a processor wirelessly? For example you have [ID1], [ID2] and [ID3] and 1=image, 2=sound and 3=video. can this ID be retrieved wirelessly so that it can be reproduced by a projector ou speakers?

    practical and commercial applications of rfid detect the tag’s location according to its reader’s location , if u want location based identification u must use gps or some other wireless application

    RFID is purely for identification and its range is less then 1 foot in most cases.
    u can transmit wirelessly ID for images or audio etc but processing must be done in at the reciving end most tag consider data as raw binary..
    but in case of rfid range is less if u want long distance communication use some other system as wi fi or bluetooth etc

    ok the minimum time required is about 1 week, based on whwther the components are available and you want to make mior modifications and how well u master the compiler ,, the time can go up to 1 month,, if u want i can give u my report and also make u as many pieces u want,,.. plz reply with ur email id and where r u from..
