Forced Induction PC Cooling

Adding lights, windows and paint to a computer case is cool but a turbocharger cooling system is over the top crazy.

“We thought a fast computer should have hot rod flames, working headlights, and a custom license plate. As for the cooling system, an LED case fan just wasn’t going to be original enough. Instead, our case fan is a turbocharger commonly found on late 1990’s Mitsubishi Eclipses and Eagle Talons.

Q: What PSI (how much pressure) does it run at?
A: None. The PC case isn’t sealed. The idea is to blow air through the case, not to pressurize it. If the computer’s case was sealed tightly enough to where pressure could actually build up, the side door would fly off and the USB cables would pop out.

Q: How fast does it spin?
A: 3500 RPM, which is nowhere near the speed it was designed to run at. However, it’s enough to move some air without having to worry about the bearings, which are designed to be water-cooled. Obviously, I’m not going to pump water through this thing. I think the project is ridiculous enough already. 🙂

Q: Does it really work?
A: Of course. It’s just not very practical, and I honestly don’t plan to run the “cooling system” on a regular basis, just once in a while for a laugh. “

  1. I you wanna nitpick, I don’t think it should be called a turbocharged system. It would more be more like a supercharged system since it doesn’t uses expent gases. perhaps if we can harness the heat from the cpu thermally generate electricity to drive the motor, it would be a more efficient use of energy. other then other then that… i love the paint on the motor… (looks like a grinder) =]

    awesome job! thumbs up

  2. (note from the project’s creator)
The motor is a Sears Craftsman bench grinder. 🙂

If you really want to nitpick, it’s not being used as either a turbo or a supercharger, because there is no air being pressurized – it’s just a ridiculously inefficient and silly case fan. It’s referred to as “Turbo” because it’s a T25 turbo from a ’97 Eclipse GS-T. If I had used a supercharger from a Mustang I would have called it a Supercharged PC.

The whole inspiration of the project was to poke fun at all the magazines and advertisements that insist on using the terms “turbocharging” and “supercharging” constantly. I just received 2 computer magazines in the mail last week, and both covers mentioned something about supercharging your computer. Can’t they come up with a new buzzword? The “Turbo” thing has been abused since the 80s, when the IBM AT had a whopping 12MHz and a TURBO button.

I’m gearing up to do some new cases in the near future, which will appear on http://www.raktron.com (and hopefully end up in a magazine or two).

    Thanks for the comments,
    Mark

  3. Looks very cool!

Does the turbine run fast enough to make the typical high-pitched turbo noise? 🙂

  4. Great work!
You should hook up those fake blowoff speakers so when you stop an app it blows off hah!

  5. You do realize that normal turbochargers spin at hundreds of thousands of RPM? 3500rpm is nothing. You can buy a case fan that spins at 3500rpm. Very cool mod though just because the way it looks.

  6. The New World Order is coming! Expose the governement for being out of control and evil! Cut through the propaganda! Wake up and be a part of the truth movement against the globalists!

  7. What kind of person would buy a Mitsubishi automobile like that white trash piece of crap in the photo above? My god, you could spend an entire lifetime performing modifications on it and it will see be a redneck white trash car… You might as well own a Dodge Stratus… It’s about the same class…

  8. Funny, I always thought that compressing air caused it to warm up. Seems like that’s why you’d run an intercooler in that Eclipse.

  9. ok very cool mod…. but Alex go back to the books, hundreds of thousands of RPM…LMAO there is no Turbo that turns that fast….

  10. People with class buy cars that are built right the first time… They don’t spend all day in their garages tearing apart their “rice rockets” (most of which are financed for 7 years).

We laugh at people like this guy because he actually thinks his car is worth a damn… If he didn’t spend all day watching Jerry Springer and NASCAR, he might be able to actually afford something worthy of respect.

  11. I bet he works at CompUSA… Probably was just made floor manager… Drinks are on him tonight! Just as long as he can take you out in his “baby”…

  12. What is with all the flaming. The guy is just showing us a fun mod he made to his computer case. Why all the hating about his car, where he might work, etc?

  13. Quit flaming the guy; it’s well known that people who flame only doso to cover up for thier own shortcommings. Look at the workmanship in his project. Why dont you all try reading the article before you comment:

NO shit to article addressed this:
Q: How fast does it spin?

Nice work on the mod, I think it’s cool factor is off the scale.
    anon.

  14. the funny thing is, I bet this guys DSM would crush most of your guys cars.

  15. Wow, I have been watching all of this progress and I can’t believe anyone would call themselves a “Saturn-Lover”, espcially in the middle of a flame war. I think Mugoto (or whatever his name is…) already won the war by default because of that…

  16. plain and simple if that is a awd spyder in background it looks like its upgraded and he used his old turbo for shits and giggles
i hate ppl who call any import rice.. how about 4cyc that can hand most v8’s among others their ass. i drive an ae86 corolla
kbb says my car is worth $400 bucks yet everyday at a gas station or supermarket i get asked how much i would sell it for, i am
no fool i won’t sell it, even with 4 grand cash in hand.

  17. According to the authors website his Neon would also.

  18. You obviously miss the pun.

  19. I think their point was that it doesn’t matter if the car would beats everyone else’s cars… It’s a Mitsubishi, which I also agree, is a piece of crap… It may go light speed but in most cities, that is the car people own on the “other side of the tracks”.

  20. Very Cool!!, And to comment on the guy making cracks about modding cars..you obviuosly don’t know much about cars. “People with class buy cars that are built right the first time… They don’t spend all day in their garages tearing apart their “rice rockets” (most of which are financed for 7 years).” Wrong, so called people with class buy cars they have no idea about, but have a high price tag, so it must be classy. Tuners mod cars to their liking, they put their thumbprint on it. It’s because of modders that we have cool little contraptions to look at. How do you explain case modding. Should we all just by Lian Li cases because they look classy and leave it at that? You laugh at this guy because you think his Mitsu isn’t worth a damn. But you have no idea what the cars does on the freeway. My only knock against it is that it’s FF. Get real dolt. Just cuz you have no idea how to work on a car, or how anything about car culture, doesn’t allow you to be ignorant.

  21. So what you’re saying is that you come from the wrong side of the tracks? People dumping upwards of 100k into thier imports arent from your side of the track. I drive an 02 M3 (wait thats german rice, ohhh the fun!).

  22. Funny the flamer mentioned Jerry Springer above:

Most of the time when that show is on (which I am embarrassed to admit I watch a lot…heh), that is the local dealership which advertises… Mitsubishi. They always have these no interest loans (It doesn’t matter if you just out of jail…Come on in! No credit, no problem!) You would never see Honda or Toyota advertise that way…

  23. Man what is when all you guys freaking out about the car. First off not everyone is either a) born into riches to afford a car that is done up “proper” from the factory. b)can justify such insane amounts of money when a VERY similar effect can be had for much less. c) simply like the idea of doing things themselves. You rich f*&ks need to grow up and see things from different points of view.

  24. “But you have no idea what the cars does on the freeway…”

    I do… It rattles… (Because it’s a piece of crap)

    heh

  25. Once I read all of the mods he had made to his car, I really started to understand what kind of dumbass he must really be…

If you are going to spend that kind of cash, at least start with a good car.

It’s like poor people that put swimming pools behind their 1500 square foot homes. What’s the point…

  30. Bigfoot has place in our family tree

MYSTERIOUS “Bigfoot” creatures said to be roaming Malaysia’s jungles are probably descended from humankind’s ancient African ancestor, homo erectus, an environmentalist says.

“The species probably evolved from homo erectus. It has evolved over time and is a distinct species specific to Malaysia,” said Vincent Chow of the Malaysian Nature Society.

Homo erectus is a species of hominid believed to be an ancestor of modern humans that existed about two million to 400,000 years ago.

Mr Chow has ventured into the jungles of southern Johor state to look for the creatures. He said “Bigfoots”, whose existence had never been proven, could shed new light on human evolution.

“It could have evolved into a new species over thousands of years,” Mr Chow said. “It will revolutionise the way how we look at our origin.”

Nice progect , F**K the flamers , most are haters who never had an orginal thought in thier lives ,
    DSM’s forever

  33. We love seeing you people getting bent about your $50+k car getting whooped on by a modified 4 banger. It makes it all that much more worthwhile…so keep trying to counter that E.D. you’ve got with your richboy rides, we will keep slappin’ you around.

As far as them rattling apart…not all that likely as we obviously know how to operate a wrench.

  34. LOL. About the license plate, that isn’t my actual plate number, but thanks for the kind words, anyway.

  35. you people do realize that if you put $5k in mods into a DSM, you can get it into low 12’s, possibly high 11’s right? we cant all afford an m3 you stuckup rich dumbass. ive seen a HELL of a lot of women driving mustangs & camaros, i’ve seen 2 or 3 driving turboed DSMs, so so much for them being chick cars…also Honda sells a shitload of cars because they are cheap and reliable. the amount of money, however, to get them into 12’s or 11’s are 2 or three times what it’d take to get a turboed DSM into the 12 or 11’s though. however if you have a fast honda, i respect it. i respect fast cars, no matter what kind. all you retards bashing on this ‘piece of crap mitsubishi’ are just posers pretending to be car enthusiasts. grow the f*&k up.

  36. You should go all the way and add a muffler “exhaust” out the back.

  37. “Mubagu Says:
    July 7th, 2006

I bet “Whypickontheguy” owns a Saturn”

Hopefully Mubagu doesn’t bet often because he would be a big loser if he did. 🙂

I drive several cars but none of them are a Saturn. My favorite would be my BMW but I also enjoy driving around in some of my other vehicles depending on what I am doing for the day.

I also would never pick on someone for driving a Saturn. They are cheap transportation and get you from point A to point B. If that is all you want out of a vehicle then I am sure they satisfy these kind of people. I will say I think the Saturn Sky is a hot little car and priced at the tempting pick one up on my way home price.

  38. First off: cool project. Made me LOL 🙂

    Second: dsm > honda

  39. Well go get you a Saturn.

When you pull up at a light next to someone in a [insert here]
    [choices: bmw, mercedes, lexus, toyota]
and they look over at you and just laugh, you will suddenly realize your a dumbass that just bought a Saturn.

They will drive off and tell their friends they saw this dork driving a poorly Amercian made piece of crap and laugh the night away… Oh, but wait, it’s OK, your Saturn has OnStar! Woohooooo! You go!!!

  40. …all of you who came to a TECH SITE to bash RICERS by Googling “forced induction.” You are the reason why the Internet needs forums like Something Awful. As for the article, great work guys – certainly good for a laugh (especially the daft folks that think you’re bragging about your car rather than a mostly useless case mod)!

  41. And by the way, you have proven beyond any doubt that you are an absolute dork by even referring to your car as a “DSM”.

Nobody knows what the hell DSM stands for… If you think, by using the acronym, that it elevates a piece of crap Mitsubishi to the level of a BMW, you are very mistaken.

I can see you in a Walmart somewhere (I have never been in one, thank God) and the cashier girl notices your keychain and says, “Hay! What kinda ride you got?” and you say, “Um, well, I don’t like to boast but I have a DSM…” Puzzled, she says, “What the f*@k is a DSM?” You say, “Nevermind” and go about paying with your food stamps.

Let’s see, so now, Saturns are SMCs and Daewoos are DMCs… I get it…

  42. Mubagu: I hate you but you are funny as hell… Does that make any sense?

  43. About the license plate thing mentioned above – there’s nothing wrong with posting your license plate online, as your license plate number is not considered sensitive or personal information like a Social Security Number, Phone Number or Address. If this were the case, you would not be able to drive in public with your license plate exposed.

  46. Yeah so, anyway, back on topic you fuking geeks with ‘internet’ balls.
Thats an awesome mod, unique idea, and great execution..
It’s obvious you weren’t trying to make it realistic or functionally efficient, and you stated that in your article. It’s all about the look anyway, and it is a fan so it does happen to work.
I like it because it’s unique.
And the paint job is great.

  47. Hey Mubagu,

I don’t mind you speaking your mind but was it necessary to post a 50 page long post saying the same thing over and over? Your post has been shortened to one iteration of your looping text…

  48. Please delete my posts. I am done.

  49. Amazing what people come up with in their workshops… hehe

Think I’ll stick to more traditional forms of cooling…

  50. I think it’s funny how many people think the pic with the car is a *real* pic. Who knows if this is the guy’s real car or not? I’m betting it’s included for comedic value and not “hey, look at my cool car guys”.

    Obvious photochop.

  51. who cares what kind of cars any one drives.
    to each his own.

what owns respect is building our own car the way u like it, and for a purpose, for whatever, drag, autox, anything.

any car where the owner takes pride in his car and puts workmanship into in order to acheive a goal is no shortcoming.

dsms are fast. they can be made faster.
hondas arent particaulairly fast stock, but they handle awesome and can be made fast also.

    single cam for life!

    gm’s leak intake gaskets.
chryslers burn oil and melt intakes.
    its all the same shit,
    korean cars piston slap. lol.

and german cars are a f*@king assbackwards and hard to work on and u have to pretend ur a weirdo europpean asshole backwords mother f*@ker to even get an idea on where to start.

  52. I figured out how to determine the direction the turbocharger is rotating.

If the operating system on this PC is Linux, then it blows.

If the operating system on this PC is Windows, then it sucks.

    Just kidding! Sweet mod!!!!

  53. GREAT work. From reading the comments you might think you could drive her around the block. This would be a hit at any lan party, lol. The engineering only exceeds the paint job in excellence.

  54. For the ‘Why refer to it as a DSM’ comment, I own one & yes we know nobody knows what DSM stands for. Usually though, REAL car enthusiasts know what a DSM is, so its easier to say DSM than it is to say Mitsubishi blah blah…and the car enthusiasts also know the potential behind them. DSMs are not like Civics, they respond to mods a helluva lot better than any other 4-banger out there. Why dont you head on over to http://www.dsmtuners.com and look at the 1/4 mile times list. I can guarentee you there’s a lot more faster DSMs than there are fast BMWs. (Fast, as in like 11+ second 1/4 mile passes)

To Mugabu, you sound like a real fu(king asshole. You’re obviously a stuckup retarded rich boy who looks down at anybody who owns anything less than a BMW. Die, dude. Seriously. The world would be a better off place without you.

  55. Dear Flamewar, thank you for consuming several minutes of our lives. Because of this lesson, and because we are intelligent, we will never bother to read or reply to a flamewar again.

    Right?

  56. Haha, nice mod man, definatley made me laugh. Nice DSM too man, I like it. Dont worry about flamers and their e-cocks, they are just too ignorant to realize what a great machine you got there. 🙂

  57. Awesome Use of the T-25 Dude Gotta love that. And Mo Bugger or w/e your name is DSM
Stands for Diamond Star Motors… it’s the Combination of Mitsubishi (diamond) And Chrysler
(Star) no clue why Chrysler is star. And yes I drive one also.
BTW If you can’t get it at Walmart or a Tuner shop You Don’t Need It.

  58. To the “why refer to it as a dsm” guy, DSM is a type of car… you don’t know what it means, but as someone else said, car enthusiasts do. DSM does NOT mean mitubishi. It means Diamond Star Motors, which was a joint venture between mitsu & chrysler to produce several cars, including the Chrylser Laser, Eagle Talon, and Mitsubishi Eclipse. A Galant or a Pajero or a 3000GT for example are not DSMs cuz they were not made at the Diamond Star Motors plant in Illinois USA, instead they were made in Japan.

And to the arrogant ass who says whats the point of a pool behind a 1500 sq foot house, ummmmm, that’s easy, some people like poools! Not everyone’s rich! Are you saying you should have to buy a rediculously large house if you want a pool? Maybe he doesn’t want, or can’t afford, a big house and a pool, so a 1500 sq ft house is just fine. It’s like the guy at the trailer park who owns a corvette (and we’ve all seen that) his car costs more than his house, but if he had the 1500 sqft house he couldn’t have the nice car…. people get what they can afford and you’re an arrogant ass to say something like that. Besides, 1500 sqft isn’t that small anyway…

My opinion. I thinkt he computer is cool, but obviously silly, like the person who made it intended.

  59. It’s cool to hate on the internet.

  60. Thats cool, but when are you going to stage 2 the system and intercool it

  61. All these morons that are disrespecting the guys car really need to get a f*ckin life. They have nothing better to do then make fun of something that has nothing to do with what the point of this was to begin with. Point being to make fun of all these people that talk about “turbocharging or supercharging” a pc. I think it gets the point accrossed quite well. For all the others that lack common sense however I can’t speak for them. So to you douche bags who are either jelous or just have nothing better to do then make fun of someones posessions. GET A LIFE.

  62. You have to put a intercooler in it if you want a little bit cooler air.And it spins too slow.it has to spin atleast 7k rpm to get rid of the turbo lag.a little watercooled intercooler will do the job

  63. I’ve got a turbocharged Mitsu SUV with a 2.6 I4 that will kick an M3’s butt in a straight line, and hang with it in the corners. I’ve autocrossed it, and won the class, which made the SCCA jerks so mad they banned it. AND it’s got a smaller turbo than the CPU uses above…

  64. That is a really great mod!!
Here’s the nit-pick…… turobchargers are OIL cooled, not water. The oil also lubes the bearing, imagine what water would do!!
Still a neat little project, good on ya!

  65. You should hook the exhaust side of the turbo on the side so it should also extract air from the case or push some more in depending on the way the electrical motor run 🙂

  66. Wow what a bunch of haters.

You guys must have really shitty lives if you need to bag on the guys project like this. Shut your mouths and go live a real life instead of being internet hose jockeys.

Personally I think it is awesome looking…even if it didn’t even blow any air in the care it would kick ass.

  67. m3s are garbage, eagle/talon/stealth/3000gt/evo are mostly garbage. v8 will always be beter, just ask the hundreds of people who have seen my taillights on my twin turbo foxbody get smaller and smaller. HMT OWNS!

  68. thanks man, thats good for a few laughs. I wouldnt have done it myself, but thats what makes it great.

as for you flamers… Not everyone has rich parents that buy them $50,000 BMW’s as a graduation gift. Cars like DSMs are usually PROJECTS. People who buy them dont want a finished product. They want something they can put their blood and sweat into. I dont care much for imports, but I can respect people who do something with them. And I cannot bilieve you put toyota in the same class as a BMW… Both are garbage, but cmon, diff class atleast… Spend $50,000 or $100,000 if your car is the same as it was off the ASSEMBLY LINE its got nothing. No heart, no class, no style, and stock performance. god you flamers make me want kemotherapy…

  69. Hah! Look at this loser! If you’ve got to buy a cheap, white trash junker, at least get yourself a respectable one, like a Lexus or something.

Anyway, I have to tell the my chauffer where to park my gold-plated Rolls-Royce for the summer.

    >>Mugabo
    e-peeeeniiiissss

  70. Dan….You should not nit-pick something you have no clue about.
for the comment of turbochargers being oil cooled.
    some are yes,
but for your info, there are also water cooled turbos, use water for cooling the bearing, which in turn cools the housing a small amount, oil is used to lube the bearings.

All water cooled turbos, use oil also.

  71. The best part about this thread, is that not only are people showing their lack of intelligence by trashing a car with arguably one of the best 4-cylinder motors in existence, but I’d guarantee 98% of the flamers on here are driving around their parents 86 Corolla’s. People abusing anonymity should be sterilized. Put your e-nuts back in your e-pants and zip up your e-zipper before you REALLY make yourselves look foolish. F*&%ing idiots.

  72. Errr, hey guys, anybody noticed the funny computer up the top, with a turbo on it!!
    I like the PC.
    Drive what you want.

  73. Interesting case mod. most car enthiusiasts will respect an old classic such as a jag e-type or a fast modified road car such as a skyline gtr with wacking great turbo’s on it. consider that the ariel atom can out accelerate a ferrari (enzo) and costs only about $60k. both are works of art, and your a total twat if you think modifications are rubbish, what you think the factories do when it releases a GTI version of a 2litre FSI golf? it sticks a turbo charger on it does a remap and puts a body kit on it……total f*ckin w*nkers who should go f*ckin slam a conrod up their rect*m’s and then get their moms to take them to the local hospital in some p.o.s hyundai (who gives a F*ck i can’t even spell the make properly)

  74. Wicked Mod!! Love it when people make things for fun…
Makes it all interessting and gives inspiration for other.
Would like to see that build in a nice pickup with the case and charger in the back sticking out for instance.
Think that would give it a nice touch 🙂 offcourse with matching paintjobs
Kudos for the creator and nvm the flamming, they all kids m8

  75. You guys do realise that DSMs were built in Normal Ill. don’t you?

from 1989 to 1999 the Mitsu Eclipse and Eagle Talon (same car, both DSM) were build in the USA by American workers, so you can lay the import crap (as if a reason is required).

Best bang for buck ever offered to the NA car market period. No car in it’s price range can touch it in handling or acceleration. You need to get into mid-grade exotics to get similar stock performance.

Fun PC mod, thanks for sharing.

  76. Reading this list of comments has its comical value, but what a fair amount of people seemed to have missed, is that this article is about a PC Mod, not a car. Lots of unnecessary comments made. Great mod on the PC, something pro-active done with time. Also there is nothing wrong with Mitsubishi cars, they are very reliable and every car has its ups and downs, just like everything else. So less criticism and more appreciation.

    Great Job

  77. Nice looking mod, I’m a huge fan of the whole “ricer” issue.. as it brings out so many clueless knobheads.
It’s an awesome job, although a bit OTT! 😉
I’m doing a “ricer” inspired mod myself, and all have some nice pics on my own website soon.

Keep up the nice work. 😀

  78. Wow this is a really fun little mod! Yeah thread has been dead for a while but props Anyways! Oh and I unchacked the box that say Notify me lol. don’t care if someone flames.

  79. Anyone who thinks eclipses are shit, meet me at the track with your lambo ferrari pieces of crap beaten em all after 5 years of modding my gsx puts out 600 horsepower at the wheel and for you noobs who don’t know what gsx is, its the all wheel drive version of the eclipse. Which means you’ ll be burning tires in your mom’s mustang and I’ll be long gone bitches. And sick mod bro I got a spare T25 lying around too LOL and 2 evo turbos hmm, twin turbo pc LOL.

  80. eclipse gsx: Heh, sounds like fun 🙂
I’d rather blaze most of them in a top-spec Caterham 7, but never mind. 😀
