That would be the Voice Coil from an Electro-Magnetic Audio Reproduction Device (a “Speaker” in Layman’s terms.) More specifically, I would guess a low-power (judging from the wire guage) high-impedance voice coil (judging from the number of turns) on an approximately 2 inch diameter base (judging from the scale of the picture.)
I burned many of those out as a teenager. I used to love to strip 8 to 12 inch speakers out of old Televisions/Consoles/Speaker Systems, point them face up at the ceiling, put some pennys on them, and plug them straight in to 120 VAC. They would make a loud “BLAPPPP” for about a half second, throwing the pennys up in to the air (sometime hitting the ceiling if you happen catch the rising edge 60 Hz phase just right) and my Mother running to the door of my room to make sure I was alright. Ahhhh, those were the days!
Lets see P = E * E / R. For an 8 ohm speaker that would be 120 * 120 / 8 = 1,800 Watts RMS!!! (Just slightly over the speaker’s power rating)

LOL, that sounds like some good fun. 🙂 I have to admit that I have never launched anything using a speaker…

Just be sure to limit it to five or six pennies, any more and it will just load it down too much. Don’t expect to hit the ceiling with anything less than 12 inch woofer, and even then it’s just a matter of luck that you catch the 60 Hz at just the right phase.
