Interested in building a CNC machine for little money? Have a look at the one that Tom McWire put together. There is some real creative use of common parts here!
Video after the jump.
"Here is a way to make a computer controlled milling machine. That puts the real power of a computer control machining into the hands of the average human. Small enough to set on the desk but scalable to any size. As inexpensive as possible without sacraficing accuracy (too much). All most all the parts can be purchased in local retail stores. And above all CHEAP you can be up and running for well under $200. With it you can do 2 Dimentional engraving and PC board etching and 3D milling and modeling in Foam, Wood, Plastic and other soft materials."

Nice job…too bad there’s no info on the electronics, PC interface and software to control the thing.

Good job. I like the under $200 part of the build. I think everything could be bought from Home Depot.

All the information about the electronics are available as a separate instructable. Link is at the end of the first paragraph.

One thing I have learned while building a router is that you should never use a dremel (like) tool and use the word accuracy at the same time.

Wow great job. Is this ideal able to work on a larger format. I am trying of cutting out guitar necks by hand and would love to have a cnc that can work with cad and 3d modeling system.
Thanks

Hi Geoff,
You can sure do that however you would need to beef up the motors and electronics to handle something of that size.

So has this been run yet? I’d be interested to see it run in plastic or even aluminum.
