I am not very impressed with the lack of security that is used in the Credit Card RFID. With the advance in technology and the easy of use for online purchases I would have thought that any new technology that was layered onto the existing credit card system would have been so robust that a hacker would not give it a second look. When RFID empnanted credit cards become more popular I can see crooks setting up powerful directional antennas in busy hallways and grab thousands of numbers per day without the card holders having a clue of what was going on. As the hacker in the video mentions why not have the card store a bit stream of garbage that can only be decrypted when it has been sent back to the issuing bank.

One thing that is often left out of the discussion around this, which definitely is a influence on the situation, is the unspoken middleman in the whole process: the credit card transaction authorization gateways. CC transactions don’t go straight to the CC companies, but through the auth gateway companies, and I would guarantee they had no desire to redesign a bulk of their system in order to accommodate this new feature which in all likelihood is something only being pushed by the marketing depts. of the banks. Thus, encryption is done at POS, and the auth gateways process the transaction as normal.

That should be, *decryption* is done at POS…

You wouldn’t even need an antenna, just have the reader in your pants pocket and brush up against someone in a crowd. Scary. What genius designed this system?

Between me and my wife we’ve had more prepaid credit cards over the years than I can count, including Current, Greendot, etc. But, the last few years I’ve found that this one is the best for are family AccountNow Visa. Why? Because I was cheerful to discover how well-designed and and piece of cake to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) AccountNow Visa’s are.
