It also changes the speed of the driven gear without having to change the speed of the driving gear. If you notice when the planetary gears go to the larger radius section, their speed decreases, then increases again when they reach the smaller radius sections of the outer gear.

Many of these are already in use in automobiles for pumping liquids through the spaces in between the gears such as in water pumps or oil pumps.
