LED Coffee Table

This LED Coffee Table made by Spark Fun is one high tech piece of equipment! I am sure there will provide many hours of entertainment.

"The table itself was bought secondhand and refinished. Then it was retrofitted with proper mounting for the big LED matrix. The individual LED matrices were mounted on a custom plastic frame. All this work was done by resident mechanical engineer and lady-killer Casey Haskell. The matrices are connected 8 to a row, all 8 rows controlled via a custom router board connected to an Olimex LPC2106 development board. The entire rig is powered by a hacked 500 watt CPU power supply.

The Rest is Just Details:

  • 65 total microcontrollers
  • 4092 RGB 256 color LED’s on 64 Matrices
  • 7-9 Amps power draw
  • 130,944 bits updated per second
  • 1 LPC2106 Master Controller
  • 1 Custom router board
  • 8 Custom power boards"

  1. 4092? Not 4096?

Neat as this is, it’d be much easier (but probably more expensive) to use an LCD screen.

  2. “probably more expensive”!?

I dont think you quite realize how expensive 64 8×8 LED matrices and serial controller boards are. This thing would have cost far more than any TV you could buy at your local shop.

FTA: “You don’t want to know. Start by multiplying the cost of the serial RGB matrix by 64 then add in a couple hundred hours of engineering and assembly. I’m sure we could do if for much cheaper now, but we learned a lot.”
