Cool Phone Watch Spotted at CES

So going to CES was not in the cards for me this year. Not a problem since I am not all that interested in the mainstream stuff anyway. I am more interested in the far out gadgets and some of the crazy products that may not find it in consumers hands. I have mainly been following the coverage from Zedomax, Hack a Day and Makezine. This phone watch that does everything was found by my friend Max from Zedomax, as the guy rattles off the featured it sounds like this thing can do everything! I think they borrowed the engineer who came up with the Swiss Army Knife and had him help in the design of this watch.

You can see more details about the Kempler and Strauss W Phone Watch by going to their site. They have some of those annoying sites that doesn’t allow direct page linking so when you get to the site look for W phonewatch in the right column.

On a side note, I have heard a few people pronounce gigabyte like this guy does (jigabyte). Is this an alternative pronunciation in some countries? I always thought is was just a non-technical person whenever I heard it but this sales rep must know his stuff?

The W PhoneWatch incorporates a GSM phone that supports the 850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, and 1900MHz bands. The 1.5-inch TFT LCD micro-touch touchscreen features a screen resolution of 128 x 128 and displays 260,000 colors. The watch measures a mere 57 x 45 x 18mm and weighs only 2.5 ounces.
Fully compatible with Bluetooth v2.0 headset and hands-free devices, the W PhoneWatch incorporates a still camera that captures JPEG images at resolutions up to 640 x 480. The integrated video camera captures video in MPEG 4 (AVI) format at a resolution of 128 x 104. The W PhoneWatch supports video playback of MPEG4 files and music files including MP3, WMA, WAV, and AMR.
The W PhoneWatch feature set includes: phonebook, SMS, call history, MP3 player, video player, video recorder, camera, utilities, games, and a file manager. The multiple-language interface includes support for English, French, Russian, Arabic, German, and Italian.
The W PhoneWatch, which can be charged by USB or via the included battery charger, provides up to 150 minutes talk time, up to 150 minutes of music playback, and up to 100 hours of standby time.

  1. The sales rep might ‘know his stuff’ by rote learning. “Jigabyte” tends to indicate the only time he’s heard the prefix ‘giga’ spoken out loud was by Doc Brown in Back To The Future. 😮

  2. Dammit pelrun you beat me to the Back to the Future comment…
    …so disappointed…

Actually I’d love to be able to wear a watch and not have to carry a phone, but I guess I’d be carrying a bluetooth device instead. I’d rather just have my phone that can do all kinds of other stuff too in most cases. Then there’s the 150 minutes talk time. It would get me through the day, but I’d better remember to charge it. I’m sure I’d have an occasional problem with that. Phone watches are becoming the modern-day equivalent of the flying car.

  3. Thanks for the info Nevermore,

I figured that it must be an alternative pronunciation…

  4. ONE POINT TWENTY-ONE JIGGAWATTS??!!??

  5. When I go into Bestbuy and a sales person asks what I am looking for I will say, please show me a system with at least 4 Jiggs of RAM.

  6. At least they’ll be able to guess what you mean. I’d buy that system somewhere else though. Big stores like that will charge you an arm and a leg for that much RAM.

Is the camera in the watch itself? A Bluetooth earpiece with a camera in it would be much more useful. It could be a plastic bit that curves around your ear, sitting on top, and out next to/above your eye for the camera part, with the common microphone design that doesn’t require extending below the ear. Put a snapshot button right on the side. Then you could get even fancier and add a transparent display right over the eye… oooooohhhh…
I’d want it to have a nice strong transmitter though. Bluetooth is weak in my experience, especially if it has to go through my clothes/body at all.

  7. Cool.
It is a much cheaper watchphone than LG’s 1000$ watchphone.
And you even get a headset/remote.

  8. All it needs is Skype. Then it’s Go-Go Gadget video phone.
