DIY Hacks

Portable CNC in a Box

Check out this Portable CNC in a Box (translated into English). If you ever wanted to setup a CNC machine in a mall on the weekend at a small booth this would be the ideal machine for that. Just think of all the custom trinkets you could make with it. Best of all the steam punk controller which reminds me of the Wiimote remote would make it look

Solid State Relay allows DIY Projects to Safely Interface with Line Voltage

If you want to play with line voltage you need to be a lot more careful compared to working with 5 or 12 volts.  Viktor has built a nice compact system for easily interfacing line voltage powered items to his DIY projects. Instead of trying to breadboard the line voltages or make a temporary rig to switch line power he gutted an old power brick and mounted a large

Christmas Tree with 404 Individually Controlled LEDs via Bluetooth

Olivier St-Martin Cormier got into the Christmas spirit this year by bringing his tree to life with LEDs that can dance to the music. He is using a stm32 microcontroller to get the job done.  You can see a video of it in action below. “Olivier St-Martin Cormier wrote: This is my Christmas tree, it has over 400 lights (exactly 404) that are all individually controlled by an

Jingle Bells playing Christmas Tree

Jewi from Germany built this Jingle Bells playing Christmas Tree that will actually teach you how to play Jingle Bells. It uses an ATmega to play the song on a speaker and at the same time it lights appropriate LEDs on a keyboard display. You can see on the project page that Jewi used a bunch of SMD parts in the project where some large parts with some large

Etch a Sketch Temperature Logger

This Etch a Sketch Temperature Logger uses a few stepper motors to turn the knobs of an Etch a Sketch. A temperature sensor is used to provide the input to a PICAXE 18M2 microcontroller. The temperature is then shown on the screen from left to right as the microcontroller commands the stepper motors to move the knobs to represent the current temperature.

Lithium Polymer Internal Resistance Meter Project

You have probably used some Lithium Polymer batteries in some of your projects or toys. They pack a bunch of power in a small package (they can also be a bit dangerous if not handled correctly).  Our friend Csaba has built a Lithium Polymer Internal Resistance Meter that will let you measure the resistance of the battery which is a good way to determine how good the battery is.

Nintendo 64 Handheld Console

Travis Breen sent in his latest hack where he shrunk a Nintendo 64 into a Handheld Console. To see the build pictures go to 3:00 point in the video. As you can see by the pictures getting it all to fit wasn’t an easy task. The case also looks to be a labour of love, t turned out nice enough to be at home on a store shelf. “Uses a full
