Indestructible USB Thumb Drive

Next time one of your gadgets breaks don’t toss it in the trash, engineer and construct a housing so that it can’t break again. At least that is what Russell Jones, an engineering student from New Jersey did!

“The aim of this project was fairly straight forward. The keychain ring on my Corsair 1GB Flash Voyager USB drive from Newegg broke, which left the poor thing prone to be left in the lab. The style of this USB mod takes inspiration from the many, many, many aluminum peripheral electronic cases found around on the internet.”

  1. Nice and beefy, althou the usb plug still looks a bit destructible 😛 , but thats beside the point

  2. Overengineering at it’s finest! I am thinking about casting some of my flash drives in solid epoxy. Cheap, and waterproof.

  3. They should make the ground for the usb out of titanium

  4. This is still destructable…. A waste of time in my opinion.

  5. Not a waste of time, its got like a geek factor of 11 out of ten. How many people can say they constructed an aluminum usb drive enclosure?

  6. Come on Annoymous, can you beat someone to death with your sad little plastic usb drive? Eh? Can you?

  7. Will it blend?

  8. At least it’s pretty cool looking.

  9. It will blend up fine in the BlendTec blender. It’s eaten up die-cast metal cars–much harder than the soft aluminum that this guy used.

As I said, I’m thinking about making a couple of 4GB drives out of my plentiful 2GB drives (desolder a chip, resolder it onto one board) and encasing them in hard crystal-clear acrylic.

  10. Ahhh, I’ve reached internet notoriety with the “Will it blend” comment! Although I think it might give it a run for it’s money.

The plug is certainly more ‘fortified’ than what it once was, but I’ve never had a problem breaking the plugs off, only the cases.

    Thanks for all the comments.

  11. i like it. i will try to do it when mine breaks. you should use a cap that will fit and superglue it into a matching aluminam piece so it has a cap
