Robotic Self Balancing Table

I wonder if the self balancing craze will make it into some real products (other than the Segway). I want a robot like this one that follows me around the house with a laptop. That way I will always be ready to get some work done when the urge strikes. What I really want to see is the same idea but built on a Ballbot type system. 🙂

"A Japanese engineer has managed to build a self-balancing table that’s capable of waiting tables, or at least delivering the food, and playing a tune while doing so. It’s equipped with several infrared light sensor to help maintain balance, gyroscopes, and is controlled with a remote — data is processed by remote computer. Early prototypes are wired, but in the video above, you’ll also see an untethered version."

  1. I have a few self-balancing tables in my house, but they’re much simpler than this. They simply use a third and fourth leg to stay perfectly upright and level, even without electricity.

  2. I think it would be quite useful at big functions moving around the room handing champagne out to various guests.

I want a similar one to use as an office chair

  3. ima have to get into robotics otherwise im going to be out of a job

  4. *bump*crash*

Has anyone NOT bumped into a server at one time or another?

  5. Oh, Yes I crashed once in an server. It took me hours to restart it afterwards.

  6. I just don’t see the point. It’s an example of ingenuity and intelligence, but if you’re looking to fill a service job with a robot. Does it have to have two wheels? Four work perfectly. It balances, it stays upright and you don’t need any fancy schmancy electronics to keep it that way. Well done to the engineer but it seems a bit pointless overall.

  7. Can this robot turn righ or left? i just wonder if the robot can do it

  8. Hi Ryan,

It sure can. Watch the video, it drives the same way a Segway does.
