Name the Thing Contest – 114

guess_this_114

Thanks to Digiarty Software, Inc for sponsoring the contest this week. They are providing 10 copies of WinX DVD Ripper Platinum, that is $299.50 worth of software spread out amongst 10 lucky winners. Nice thing about this software is you can make backups of all your DVDs so that your originals can be kept safe and you can just watch copies.

“WinX DVD Ripper Platinum can rip the content of DVDs to all popular video formats such as AVI, MOV, FLV, WMV, MPEG, MP4, 3GP, etc. What’s more, it also owns the ability of ripping different DVDs (including encrypted DVDs) to Sony PSP, Apple iPhone, iPod, iTouch, Apple TV, Zune, Mobile phone, etc.”

This contest will run for one week (January 9, 2010 – January 15, 2010) . Ending time is based on central standard time. To enter, identify the item pictured above and give an example of what can be done with it. Make and model isn’t needed just what it is and what it can be used for is fine.

Please do not give the answer in the comments.

  1. Found it… but I don’t think I’d have much use for the software (I run linux)… so I’ll leave it for people who need it.

  2. Easy as pie, it’s an example of what happens when you etch circuit boards while inebriated.

  3. Wow I am impressed, many people are providing the actual machine that this was used in.

This is obviously from some vintage equipment but you don’t need to be specific (make and model) to enter, just what it is and what it can be used for. Sorry about any confusion, I will also add this to the contest post.

  4. I’m not sure what this is, but what a nice looking and unusual layout ! I used to do this kind of routing a looong time ago, using black tape and a razor blade 🙂 Nowadays all is at a right angle and grid aligned.

I don’t have use for the software either, there are very good free tools to do the same thing, so I won’t participate. (Alan, maybe you should consider accepting sponsoring only from hack-related vendors ?)

  5. Got it as first result on first search 😀
I think I’ll leave the prize for those who need it as well.

  6. >Got it as first result on first search

You’re better than I am Owen, I got it on my second set of search terms. 🙂

I dunno what you guys do for a living, but I’m a programmer and with my salary, you don’t turn anything down that’s free!

  7. What it is: An artist’s take on electronics
What it can be used for: Ticking off a CAD program.

  8. I’m a programmer with zero salary at the moment, but it’s ok because I’m only 15 I still live with my parents. 🙂

Recession hit hard and really fast.

  9. @ JeremyC – LOL Gold!
@ everyone else – Stop teasing!! Argh!! I’ve googled.. and googled.. and googled!! Will wait to see the answer before I slap myself in the head while saying “Of course!”

  10. @Krusty – I needed the whole weekend and at least a dozen of search terms in all combinations. I only wonder why people generally call me a smart guy…

  11. Hint… think beyond the contents of the image when searching. Perhaps I’ve said too much already, but that will help immensely.

  12. provided you understand the hint, that is.
Alan, did you have too much egg nog? There’s a three contest backlog with no winners announced!

  13. A tornado hit this circuit board. must be from the midwest!

  14. gee! Is anyone spaced out. I aggreciate this sweepstakes just let is ahead for 2010.

  15. Hi John,

Thanks for catching that date error. 🙂 I am not sure how I got one right and one wrong…

  16. Brownian motion meets PCB design…

  17. I would have really liked to win this but after several days of searching the web no luck in finding anything close to this image so good luck to all of you that knew what it was for.

  18. Hey Tammy,

Just submit a guess. Remember that you don’t need a make or model just what the thing does and what it would have been used for.

    Good luck!

  19. The contest is over. Please tell me: What is this thing?

  20. Wow! What an amazing looking calculator! Yeah, this one had me stumped!!
