Sony Mavica MVC-FD7 Teardown

Sony Mavica MVC-FD7

Dave Jones from the EEVBlog does a Sony Mavica MVC-FD7 Teardown. I remember playing with one of these things in the store when it came out. Can’t remember what they cost but it wasn’t cheap. It is funny to think that it stores pictures on a 3.5 inch floppy drive that only holds 1.44 MB! These days you would be hard pressed to store one or two pictures from a good phone these days in 1.44 MB never mind a real digital camera. If you are thinking that the lag time of a second is too long when snapping pictures today just think of the delay that you would have if you were waiting to store each image to a spinning floppy. All that being said this was still quite an interesting thing since the alternative was developing film.

It is interesting to see that the optics section of the camera is larger than most compact cameras these days. Even though this type of device wasn’t destined to have a long live the camera internals were built with the typical Sony quality of the day. You can see the CCD sensor at 21:40.
