What it is and isn’t Contest

Congratulation to the last contest winner.

A little something different this time. There will be two prizes and two ways to enter. Just like the Name the Thing Contests in the past you can send your answer by email. You can also guess what it isn’t by leaving a comment in the comments section below. The contest will run till mid-week instead of just the weekend, January 19 – 23, 2008 . Ending time is based on central standard time.

Prizes for this week will be a few cool watches that will control almost any TV.

Name the Thing
To enter, identify the item pictured above and give an example of what can be done with it. Please do not give the answer in the comments.

Send an email to contest @ hackedgadgets.com with "Name the Thing Contest" as the subject, and the message body consisting of:

  •  The name of the item in the above picture
  •  An example of what the item pictured above can be used for

The winner will be chosen at random from all of the correct entries.

Guess What it isn’t
Have some fun with it, simply reply in the comments what this device isn’t. :) Make it funny, crazy, weird… Just use your imagination. With a short vote the best comment will win the prize. Have a look at my first comment for an example

Added January 28, 2008

The item to guess was a  Cassegrain Unit. No clues on this one, I was thinking that no one would get it but I was surprized that there were a bunch of correct answers (not as many as usual though). The winner of the email submission is  Michael A.

The winner of the comment portion is Jordan Horwich (comment 14)

"It is the machine that keeps the center of our earth spinning. Without it the core of our earth would stop, there would be no magnetic poles, and our atmosphere would shut down. We would probably all die from a big asteroid without our atmosphere. :( All the different slots in it hold all of the gearing mechanisms. They help the Earth maintain a constant speed. Normally, there would also be a big energy shield protecting it from the heat in the middle of the Earth. And finally, without this machine, we would have to do something like they did in the movie Core (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/core/#synopsis) where they had to use nuclear bombs to get the earth spinning again."

Thanks to all who entered.

  1. This is an industrial salad spinner, bowls with magnetic bases are snapped into up to six slots to speed the preperation of food in large restarants. It is not convienient for home use since this model only runs on 220 VAC.

  2. It’s a portal generator that creates miniature portals to different dimensions. You can select different dimensions by inserting specially coated glass plates. It requires a sun to power it and therefor has never been powered on.

  3. It’s santas little toy factory. When you put the front plate back on, then the dwarf’s will come out of their hiding and start working in it. It’s got many floors for different toy’s.

  4. Alan, I’m not sure if my first email made it through (I have not got the ACK message)! So i’m going to send the exact message again with a different email (just so you know that i’m not cheating or anything)

  5. It’s not a truck

  6. It’s not mine.

  7. Its a small off-duty Czechoslovakian traffic warden!

  8. A very early version of the “self scratching” record table, that sadly was doomed to failure. However it did have a very short lived carrier as a back up for DJ Jazzy Jeff.

LOL Sorry, that was all I had.

  9. It’s a storage rack for options for a food processor – it chops, it slices, it dices!

  10. it’s nasa’s next attempt at a mars rover

  11. its not my prototype girl robot (eyes shift)

  12. In spite of #9, it is NOT a vinyl record player!

  13. It is the machine that keeps the center of our earth spinning. Without it the core of our earth would stop, there would be no magnetic poles, and our atmosphere would shut down. We would probably all die from a big asteroid without our atmosphere. 🙁 All the different slots in it hold all of the gearing mechanisms. They help the Earth maintain a constant speed. 14. I’ll tell you what it’s not for, son. And when I do, you’ll understand why I can never go back to Sea World.

    🙂

  15. it is not the hubbel telescope

  16. Its a rack of flux capacitors wired together so it now allows you not only to travel in time but to manipulate time and space, also it now docent need to travel at high speed or being mounted in a car to archive its operation.

Oh and for convenience coffee comes out the bottom.

  17. “It’s the Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit; it makes shoes for orphans.”

  18. It’s the touchable form of the first Linux kernel.

  19. It is Reactor Number 4 from Chernobyl… The little knobs on he side are the steam pipes. What a flawed design…

  20. It isn’t:

Something used to play hide and seek. As you can see on the picture, someone is hiding behind it. Did you see it? If not, well it’s because it WORKS! Some won’t see you, others won’t approach it…

  21. I was thinking this one might stump everyone, but these have been some correct answers emailed in! The number of emails are down considerably though… If you know what it is your odds of winning are good. 🙂

  22. It is a coffee grinder! I have this exact one at home! The different drawers are for different grinds. Anything from French Press to Espresso. You can also see the cooling system with the drawers out. It prevents the grinder blades from getting too hot, thus affecting your roast and releasing some of those all-important caffine molecules and essential oils. Really maintains the character.

  23. I don’t think my comments are posting

  24. Honestly, this was the first attempt to copy LP’s.
Because of copyright-problems it never hits the market.

  25. Prototype Ipod using 8 track tapes.

  26. It’s a screencap of R2D2 just coming out of the hot oil bath from the movie Star Wars XIV that will be coming out in a few years. It’s so sad to see him stoop so low, especially after all those interviews he did saying he didn’t believe in on-screen nudity…

  27. It’s a Raid-5 floppy drive from 1972.

  28. It’s a person in jeans and a red track jacket.

  29. it’s not the first toilet paper that works without paper (and toilets)

  30. is a “Continuum Transfunctioner”, a device capable of destroying the universe.

  31. It’s the QSE-5000-P

Prototype build of Starbuck’s new Quint-Shot Espresso maker. 5 times the jolt of caffeine to keep you going for days! (rumored to be priced at only 10x the cost of a single shot)
Unfortunately, it will not be marketed anytime soon, as it seems to have been stolen by someone needing to stay up for days doing research for a contest online. Unnamed sources say the investigation is ongoing…

  32. I am going to enter the “what it is not” contest again…

It is the internal workings of the 8088 processor… 😀

  33. It’s an IV injection timer.

  34. It’s some new hyper good watch which show the exact time.

  35. Technology is ever increasing – and the American way is bigger, better, faster. This device we have showcased above is actually ALIEN technology. This device was covered up by the Federal Government back in 1945, when nobody has ever seen such things before. We couldnt figure out what it was used for, until recently – Now we think it is useless, since we stole so much more of these Advanced Technology Devices.

  36. I think you should start posting the answers to the name that thing contests after they are over. This way those of us that don’t know the answer can learn and finally lay our speculations as to what it is to rest.

  37. It was recovered in Roswell, NM in 1947. No one knows exactly what it is. Drawer 5 was confiscated by
some guys in black suits. It’s interesting to note that Aliens apparently speak English, however.

  38. Just got the prize – thanks!
