Spykee Meccano Robot

I remember my Meccano set that I played with when I was growing up. Lots of nuts, bolts and pieces of metal. This Spykee robot represents the new face of Meccano that I could only wish was available when I was a kid. I can just imagine the creative hacks that we will see in the near future! Thanks to Sven for the system overview.

  • Spy robot. Spykee can be controlled within your home network using a WiFi connection. Just install some software on your PC or Mac and you can remotely send commands to Spykee. The video and sound from Spykee’s webcam are transmitted to your computer.
  • Telepresence. Because Spykee has a WiFi connection it can easily connect to the Internet. This opens up many new possibilities for the robot, such as remotely controlling your robot from any place in the world via Internet.
  • Digital music player. Spykee has a 2W loudspeaker. So just send MP3 music to Spykee and you can enjoy your music.
  • VOIP phone. Use the Spykee robot together with Skype, MSN or GoogleTalk to talk with your friends! Because Spykee is mobile, you can now talk with your friend from any place in your house.
  • Video surveillance. Spykee can be programmed to send you an email whenever it sees things that are suspicious. Your robot will now guard your room!
  • Infrared auto-park recharging. Mobile robots have a limited time to operate due to their batteries. Spykee is a smart robot that will automatically recharge itself when its batteries are low.
  • Processor. Details about the specific processor that Spykee uses and possibilities for further hardware extensions is currently not know. If anyone has some info then please post it on the forum.
  • WiFi. Spykee is WiFi enabled. According to its specifications the robot should work within a distance of 100m under optimal conditions.
  • 2DC motors. Spykee has two motors that can be independently controlled so that it can drive forward, backwards, turn left and turn right.
  • Camera The camera has a resolution of 320×200 pixels and under optimal conditions it has a framerate of 15fps.
  • IR auto-parking recharge system. Spykee comes with a docking station to automatically recharge its batteries.
  • Lights and optical fibres Not only can Spykee make sound, it also has lights to cheer up your room!

Thanks Robert.

  1. COOL BUT IT MAKES NOISES WHEN YOU MOVE IT IT CAN NOT BE USED AS SPY GADGET BUT IT IS REALLY COOL I LIKE IT BUT AS THIS GUY SAID IT ONLY CAN BE USED BY IT ON SOFTWARE THAT IS REALLY BAD BECAUSE I WOULD LIKE TO USE IT FOR SOME PROJECTS LIKE GIVING HIM GUN OR SOMETHING IT WILL BE RALLY HARD BECAUSE I AM SURE THAT THIS ROBOTS SOFTWARE WILL NOT BE COMMAND LINE FRIENDLY ON PC

  2. miky, your keyboard is broken. Please fix it before you seriously offend someone.

Alan, I don’t know. Meccano is supposed to be flexible. Build complex things out of generic interchangeable parts.
Lego is also going the wrong direction.
Nothing against brains and computers. But you can not build this new things into something else.
Meccano (and Lego) should not be a stupid puzzle but a box of infinite possibilities things you can do with it.

  3. Hi !

I’m starting 2 wonder if the spykee webpage is down on remote
    !?!

http://www.spykee-robot.com/forum.html ( to many people with this problem, around the world )

See pictures in this Email that i have a Spykee !

I bought Spykee, because of the remote and video Surveillance options ( Surveillance solution smtp = gmail ? )

Can y explain by words, what i have done wrong ? ( make a Remote install video explanation )

LOCAL Connection=Great, Can’t get the REMOTE Connection to work:

I was able to get my Spykee connected to my wireless router at Home just fine (Local Connection), but I can’t get it to work on REMOTE connection no matter what I do.

I followed everything on the instruction manual:
    1. Changed the admin password.
    2. Activated Remote capability on the robot set up.
    3. Registered my Spykee, assigned robot name and password, and
    4. Got the robot name and password verified.
(btw, my password does not contain any weird character as with the other guy was explaining on a separate post)

Now, whenever I try to connect ‘remotely’, I always get the error “THIS ROBOT IS NOT AVAILABLE”

I even disabled all the Firewall restrictions

I have read the Norwegian internet manual
    MvH: bjoern ( Norway )

  4. Send Reply to my Email: bjoern1982msn@hotmail.com

I ( We = alot of people around the world ) need help to solve this problem !

Spykee problem = Remote Connection !?!

Next Spykee problem = will probably be the smtp ( use Gmail ? ) to get video and pictures, sent over directly from surveillance to your Email !

Meccano dosen,t respond to my email !

    Can anyone help me !?!

  5. Ok where to begin? Ok as for your problem did you assign your robot an IP or did you leave it Static? Did you use port forwarding in your router? (Port 9050) Should work well. As for the Gmail thing >(.gmail.com) Omit the smtp. this just sends the sevrer an error. I got one of these Robots for Christmas needless to say I need a Wireless card for my computer I.e.(USB Wifi) to use it in local mode of which I haven’t got off my butt to one purchase yet. But I have watched all the Youtube Video’s from a guy in england and well if it works over there it should work here. by the way this expensive toy was made in France and imported from China. Good luck getting help other than local support I.g. Internet friends. Hope this halps.

  6. I was just wondering how many registered users can spykee have?

  7. Great ! I will add this to my bookmarks. TY

  8. I have figured a work around for the “THIS ROBOT IS NOT AVAILABLE” problem. I configured my router/firewall to be DMZ for the Spykee’s IP. This will open all ports for the Spykee. Then connect remotely using my WAN IP address by putting it in the “Remote Robot” box when connection, then found out that it was using port 9001 from the firewall logs. I then turned off DMZ and forwarded just port 9001 to Spykee’s IP. Not sure if everyones port will be 9001 or not. This port isn’t the same as the one on the setup since i put something else on there. Hope this helps!
