I don’t use Outlook as my mail reader but if I did this would be a cool hack to shutdown computers (or launch other programs). I could see this to be useful to perform backups on demand without having to log into the actual computer. It isn’t very secure but it is a good example of security through obscurity.

I would prefer starting a computer not turning it off

I can see this being used by a ‘script kiddy’ by having it spam multiple email addresses with that phrase or am i just thinking too much into this..

is pretty good if you want to used for some x10 application to turn on the lights at your house, or to turn on the the webcam and email you a picture.

all you have to do is custom-name your .bat files as rigorously as a strong password, and it would be pretty unlikely a spam attack would activate anything.

btw, almost forgot, most cell-phone carriers have free, pre-built methods so that you can do sms-to-email without having to register for an account with qwiry:

I set this up yesterday with thunderbird. I had to download an addon to thunderbird though as it doesn’t support VB scripting (or something). Anyway, never used that kwiry thing as my phone supports email.
Its really good. I use it when the misses is looking through my porno collection 😛

I did something similar to this a few years ago… I had it set up to turn on my computer if I sent a specific code via text message to a specific gmail account.
I installed the OpenWRT firmware on my Linksys WRT-54g wireless router and was treated to a full suite of linux commands… From there it was relatively simple to set up a cron job to telnet into gmail’s POP server, get all the new messages, grep for my phone number, then grep for the password.. There’s a handy program called etherwake I then used to turn on my computer.

Hi Jesse,
Yes sometimes SMS messages cost money, on some plans they are free.
