@Zaketus, I think they are easier to build than buy, we have about ten of these at my school they are quite interesting, i once made a 3 meter long one for a garden party…

my physics teacher brought one in once. he did a big show about waves and other things it ended with him laying on a bed of nails and another teacher breaking bricks on him with a sledge hammer. he was the coolest teacher ever!!!!!!!!

My science teacher would blow things up, have us take notes, then blow some more stuff up. The first day of physics, he taught us why grain bins blow up so easily with flour air and a candle. Awesome fireballs that.

my chem teacher was the one that blew things up. soap bubbles full of natural gas, hydrogen filled balloons, lithium and sodium in water, and the “alcohol bottle rocket” where he swirled alcohol in a bottle and lit the opening. then it took off down the desk.

It’s a gas grill, but the awesome part is what you did to it. It’s controlled by sound waves, so if you put music to it, it will be like the bar on media player. A representation of a EQ visualization. see the flames to my music.

Any email client should work, the contest address is just a normal email account. The only thing that is special is the auto responder that sends a confirmation email back. does the rig work with PVC??

i would say no. It might work for a minute but then it would probably melt. its best to use aluminum or steel. Just make sure you seal the ends up so there are no leaks where they not supposed to be. also you need to make sure its completely full of gas before lighting it (gas coming out of all the holes just give it a couple of min. before lighting) if not the flame could back up inside.
just remember even a 2-3 foot long 3-4″ wide pipe holds a lot of gas so be careful

there is a tipe of PVC that has an inner core made of aluminum.
That could stand the heat.

I have never seen any plastic pipe with a metal inner core. I think you are correct, it is definitely not taken in North America.

Puzzled by some of the above comments… You DID notice that this assembly is in a lab, attached to the typical bunsen-burner gas feed?? Which means that there’s no real danger of the flame getting INSIDE the container and causing an explosion — there’s no oxidizer present until the gas is outside and mixes slightly with room air. In the same sense, as long as there’s any significant pressure of gas feeding in, the flame itself is automatically going to “stand off” from the pipe by a couple of millimeters (the gas/air mixing interface depth), so the radiant heat load on the pipe surface is highly unlikely to be enough to ignite PVC.

your right about there being no oxidizer in the tube when its at full pressure. i was warning not to try to light it when you first turn on the gas. if you do then there will be gas and air mixed in the tube that could potentially explode just like with a gas grill you always need to let it run for a few seconds before lighting. even if the gas pressure keeps it from backing up into the gas line it would still burn or explode the rig. as for the radiant heat i will admit i don’t know. your probably right but me personally i would rather have metal then plastic when working with fire.
