Here is the winning comment (46):
When Youri Gagarine came back from his pioneering space trip it became apparent that mutant strains of armpit microbes created by cosmic rays would quickly become a problem. They had to keep him in quarantine for 40 days before his body odor came back to normal levels. Likewise, when the US astronauts came back from lunar missions their combined stench was so unbearable that they had to be kept in an airtight container. Look at this document illustrating the situation : http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/aircraft-pictures/assets_c/2009/07/ap11-S69-40147-42100.html . That’s why when the USSR built the Mir space station they equipped it with a state of the art washing machine, pictured above. As you can see it is built in the purest soviet style. Is a front-loading type machine, you can see the window of the equipment on the left, dials indicating contamination levels on the right. Above the window are 2 timers for the wash and dry cycles. Like many space technologies this is now in wide use in our own earthly washing machines.

Unfortunately the soviet engineers made the machine too small to wash more than one underwear at once. As a result the astronauts spent most of their time washing their clothes, doing little scientific work. The vibrations of the spin cycle led to various dysfunctions in the whole station. In 1997 Vladimir Oulianov having not washed for 10 days, was forced by his comrades to wash all his clothes at once. This overload created a break in the station’s hull, resulting in the depressurization of the cabin. Fortunately, nobody died and the astronauts enjoyed a short respite inside their space suits. Ultimately, the constant vibration caused all of the bolts of the station to unscrew, leading to the demise and crash of the station in the pacific ocean.

If I win here’s what I’d buy with the $20 -oh I see what you did there. Good job.- :

  1. Back in the day coal boilers were very popular for heating homes. Getting coal delivered into house via the coal chute and shoveling the coal into the boiler was lots of work. When gas was available via a pipeline to the house it was a natural progression to convert the existing coal boiler to burn natural gas. The picture is the first conversion. There were many gauges installed to closely monitor the system to ensure it was operating safely. Notice the large red valve in the center of the picture, that is the emergency boiler shutdown valve. The beige controls were installed a few years later when remote temperature control was added.

The items I would order with a $20 gift certificate from Dino Direct is listed above. Here are the links. $19.83 if I calculated right.

  2. I haven’t seen one of those in a long time. That is one of the first computer systems, way before ones and zeros were thought about. This system used various levels of fluid to perform calculations. 5 liters of water plus 5 liters of water is 10 liters. You would use the crank handles on the left to enter the volume desired and the large red knob to calculate (combine the liquids) the result. Notice everything is in duplicate, that is to enter both sides of the equation.

I need a new keyboard, my last one got damaged when I spilled a drink into it. I would get this waterproof keyboard so that never happens again…

  3. this if i remember correctly is the inner workings of a women’s uterus. women always say we put their buttons, well it’s hard not to look at all those buttons and switches and valves it’s bound to happen sometime, and you see that small door? thats where when the women is pregnant the kid may walk around and monitor the equipment, except he isnt very good at it all the time and messes up, hence mood swings, vomiting, and other negative attributes of pregnancy. what they need to do is update to an all digital version, i suggest linux

i would get as many as i could of these

  4. this? this isn’t my mess.

  5. Its the first cockpit design for the apollo lander, the NASA engineers finally disbanded this design for a new fangled technology known as the semi-conductor. The astronauts where much more happy with the Semi-conductor idea, as the often claimed that they were burning them selves on the steam pipes on the old design. One astronaut when asked about the cockpit design he said “I was elated, ecstatic and extremely surprised that we were successful”.

  6. This is awesome! That has got to be the COOLEST Steampunked wristwatch I have ever seen!! Granted it would probably look a little better more brass, but you get extra points for using gauges to both tell time and check the status of the mechanism itself. Sweet!!

  7. I take it this is US residents competition only? I’m from the UK! Oh well – Regardless heres my entry –

Its the troublesome toilet system onboard the International Space Station – http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8158350.stm
    A striking resemblance I think you’ll agree.

  8. This isn’t (the Dashboard of) my Father’s Oldsmobile.

  9. Ah, the first generation microwave oven. Good memories of not so great chow. With this baby, a busy housewife could cut cooking time in half, while cutting down on edibility by three-quarters. I believe it is missing the manufacturer supplied lead apron. Good times…

I would get a new voltage sniffer and a two-way stubby screwdriver for my jacket pocket:

  12. This is the new addition to the international space station about to be deployed. The big red wheels in the foreground are the locking system so that once in place they can rotate them to ensure the units do not seperate. in the foreground you can see two little joy sticks that are used to minupulate the arm that is not in the pucture but can be viewed thru the round window.

  13. This is of course the latest and most sparkling Windows 8 GUI with extra “Wauw”-effect.

  14. This is not the controls for the latest nuclear submarine built by gremlins for the unterluftwafe dolphin patrol…. 🙂

here’s one of those things thats never made it into my toolboxes, I have probably 20 other types of wire stripper/cutters not including pliers, but never one of these 🙂

  15. looks like the controlls for a submarine for the relse vales, that controll the balast tanks

  16. This is the inside of my co-workers brain. I’m glad this picture was posted because I always wondered what it looked like inside his cluttered mind. We’re software developers and this explains wonderfully why he produces such convoluted code. I’m curious to know though, what kind of camera did you use to take such a high quality image inside that vacuum and did you go in through the left or right ear, or some other orifice?

  17. It’s the control panel for my Halloween animatronic system.

  18. something is funky with the post code … sorry for my double post..
looks like aniket did the same

  19. Hi arcnemisis,

The spam filter is catching lots of the comments because the links make them rank high as spam. Sorry for the trouble. For anyone else that sees this comment, if your comment doesn’t appear right after you submit it the spam filter probably caught it. The comment will get un-blocked later in the day. If you still have issues please let me know and I will look into it. 🙂

  20. This? Oh that’s just my old Coffee machine. Not only does it do all the different styles of coffee imaginable, it also grinds the beans, roasts them and also controlls the hydroponics system to grow and harvest them.

And I think I would buy this with the gift card as it would be perfect to use as a filter and to drink from. http://www.dinodirect.com/New-25×30-Nautical-Brass-Zoom-Telescope.html

  21. well, being a geek from wayback, i am excited to see someone has found the prototype of the original
PONG video game console. those slick metal joysticks were hard to get use to. those big hydraulic
pumps in the background sure did generate the heat. not to mention noise. good thing our 400 pound
wooden console television had big speakers of the 128 byte electromechanical memory stack.
ah, the good ol days. anyways i would buy a couple of these pocket alcohol testers. that way,
when my buddies catch me leaving the bar with a fat chick, i can prove it’s just the beer.

  23. No problem Aniket,

I have no problem with a few duplicate posts as long as there are no Viagra ads. 🙂

  24. The Nuclear Power Plant has had a perfect safety record for 25 years and decides to have an open house for the public to tour the plant. An inquisitive young lad slips past the guard, into the Control Room and says to himself “Hmmmm, I wonder what this button does?”

(so much for the safety record!)

If I win, I’d get http://www.dinodirect.com/Door-Proximity-Entry-Lock-Keypad-Access-Control-System-with-Power-Supply-YH-SK98-TA208.html for all the remaining the Power Plants so that doesn’t happen again.

  25. Its a screenshot of one of the puzzles in the new myst game!
Dino has a pretty good selection of cheap audio/usb/ipod cables, I’d probably grab a bunch of those.

  26. This isn’t the the nuclear power plant I built in my garage, since that was destroyed by the government(or was it?), but it sure looks like it though. Hey where did you get that picture? I want my cheap electricity back!

  27. This isn’t a hacker/parts scavengers wet dream… well it is really.. oh I don’t get this competition!

In the UK also, hope I can still be entered (fnar fnar)

I would get myself a solder core holder cause I am always loosing those plastic tubes down the back of the couch…
    http://www.dinodirect.com/Solder-Core-Wire-Holder-Yellow.html
Or perhaps gold coloured soldering tips for my solderstation cause even geeks can’t resist bling!

  30. This is the brains of the machine that decides who lives or dies if you are on the government run public option of Universal Health Care. Punch in granny’s name, press a button and spin the Dial-o’-Fate. Cross your fingers, Granny, you just might get that operation!!!

If I win I will be getting this wooden model goat:

    http://www.dinodirect.com/Goat-Woodcraft-Construction-Kit-Puzzle-Toy.html

  31. That is the mainframe that the FBI confiscated from The Pirate Bay headquarters. After all the data was wiped, it was of no use and was sent to the Smithsonian as an artifact of the enforcement of the DMCA laws that haunt us today.

  32. It isn’t pretty. 😀

  33. Clearly what the inside of a 555 timer looks like

  34. Hi Webdy,

Not sure if that coupon code works. I will ask and get back to you.

  35. Sorry about the double post, my post didn’t show up after a few minutes so I figured I got caught in some spam filter and I retried with altered URLs. Allan, I you could delete the second one (#47)…

  36. It’s not the control panel of the female mind. How do I know this?

    1 – Not complicated enough
2 – _These_ controls are clearly labeled
3 – No Big Red Scram Switch

  37. Michael Jackson slept in this when he was alive. He’s got a similar one made of gold now. Joe wants Michael’s Money…
Joe also wants me to have high temp tape..:)

  38. This is world’s first garden sprinkler installation. After installing this system, there was just enough room left for a single flower pot. This wasn’t entirely useless, though. This system ensured the pollution of the water due to hydraulic oil leakage, making it perfect for unwanted weeds popping up in your ‘garden’. The fact that the flower itself would die out wasn’t taken into consideration.

And this is what I’d get for just under 20 dollars.

  39. This is NOT the Mark V (.5) version. The rather primitive design of the Tingley (r) RSP socket is a dead give away. It’s clearly neither the right phase, polarity or composition. You really must strive to make these contests more difficult.

  40. The coupon code “DDLIFE” will always be an effective…

  41. It’s not from a Navy ship; otherwise the bulkheads would be painted gray. Probably Coast Guard.
It’s not from a submarine; the watertight door, although small, is the wrong shape.
It’s not from a civilian vessel; see the two navy style intercoms above the watertight door.

  42. Hi webdy,

Tory (comment #61) works for Dino Direct so you are in luck that code will work for you.

  43. This is the current state of the Boeing 787 (pipe)Dreamliner cockpit. First flight when???

  44. There is no way this is the control panel for a super top secret military bunker underneath Flint, Michigan. Designed to monitor the radiation levels which well inevitably happen once we start our nuclear war with Oklahoma.

  45. I know that this isn’t what I thought it would be. It’s not my calculator, nor is it the wristband that I made for my little sister, but lost somewhere in my room. How can I tell? Simple, the wristband didn’t have any buttons, and it was yellow and my calculator has a lot more buttons, and a sticker on it. Of a heart. And I don’t see any hearts here. This is clearly a device to make pancakes. Because pancakes are round, and this device has lots of round things. The red valve lead to little boxes where you have to put the ingredients in and the gauges keep track of time, weigh the ingredients and tell you how big and round it is. I have one in my basement. It makes awesome pancakes.
And this is what I would like to win; (My current headset is…not awesome..like pancakes)
