Thanks to 4D Systems for sponsoring the contest this week. They will be providing a DK-160G1 (OLED development kit) and a SOMO-14D Embedded Audio-Sound Module to the winner. This is about $175 dollars worth of gear which will let you play with the latest and greatest in OLED technology. 4D Systems is an Australian based company, which is a worldwide leader in the development and manufacture of intelligent graphic display modules.

This contest will run for one week (December 12 – December 18, 2009) . Ending time is based on central standard time. To enter, identify the item pictured above and give an example of what can be done with it.

The item to guess was a CT X-ray Tube

Based on the response this was the hardest contest we have run to date! Congrats to everyone who got it right!

    You aren’t the only one. This has been up for about 10 hours and there still aren’t any correct answers. I wonder if this one will carry on till next week. Either way, if you have an idea of what this is you have your odds of winning are great!

    No real set in stone policy. What I have done in the past when someone guesses something but later finds the real answer I have allowed the second guess, but that also means that the first one is deleted…

    Dial-up, thankfully that is a distant memory… I remember the good old days, setting the machine up to download files overnight. Is high speed not available in your area, or are you just not online enough to justify it?

    I am curious, do videos play over dial up, or do they just need 10 minutes to buffer?

  14. Unfortunately, we can’t get anything else… the DSL and cable lines stop about 5KM down the road, and satellite is ridiculously overpriced for what you get- 10x the cost for not much of a speed improvement.

    Fortunately, high-speed is on the way… and yes, short videos (~30sec – 1min) can be played with some patience…

  18. Why the website staff does not publish the answer of the previous contest ? It used to to that a few editions ago but not anymore. That was the whole fun of it… checking the right answer after a week.

  21. OK spill it folks – those of you who figured this out by searching, what keywords did you search for? I was completely stumped.


  22. Usually I have an inclination as to function/purpose… then I hit google images and try to refine the search based on things that look similar and the content of the relevant pages- Eventually I find what I was looking for.

    In this case, though I had no ideas where to start and so I couldn’t get a good start.


  23. The pic has ‘anode’ and ‘cathode’ labeled. I exhausted all searches for laser heads and laser diodes, so I started to wonder about other spectrums. On a whim I searched for MRI and then CT Scanners. Check it out on google images, the first pic that comes up when you search for ‘ct xray tube’.

    You have anode and catode, as you know that there is electron beam between them so you may guess that black gap in the picture may be somethig like x-ray berilium window.

    That was mine way of thinking. Google was the rest.


  25. vintagepc mentioned something that does give him an edge,an unknown fact (well until now anyway) is that I use Google Image search to discover an image of something that I am thinking about 9 time out of 10…
