Paper V-12 Engine

When I had a pilot’s license and more disposable income I wanted a Hawker Hurricane. Sure The Spitfire was more famous and sexier but both planes had the Rolls Royce V12 Merlin engine. Now that I no longer have a licenese and a lot less cash I have to settle for paper airplanes. At least I can now have the paper motor to go with them. Yee’s Job has

Fun with Robotic Arms

Some of these systems look so dangerous. I wonder what it would take for one of these systems to glitch and malfunction. A slight error is all it would take to kill someone! Kuka makes robots mainly for industrial use and their site is great since they document many of their installs. For example have a look at the LegoLand RoboCoaster.

Fire Alarm Bell Alarm Clock - Worlds loudest alarm clock?

Overview Ever sleep-in because your alarm clock wasn’t loud enough? With this design that is guaranteed not to happen! This hack takes a standard cheap alarm clock, some interface components and a fire alarm bell to get the job done right. Normally these small alarm clocks use a piezo buzzer to attempt to wake you up. The alarm signal is hijacked from the clock circuit board and used as an

Articulated Hand for under $20

Looking for a cool science fair project? Forget the exploding volcano, check out this Articulated Hand project! “My niece Sydney needed help for a 7th grade Science Fair project. I helped another friend’s daughter (Kaitlin) build an articulated hand for a project in the past and suggested we resurrect the project. The build is fun for the kids and I wanted to try some enhancements on the original idea. Materials:

Cook Hot Dogs with Electricity

Looks like the University of Alaska Fairbanks has grouped the engineering and culinary arts programs together. 🙂 “How does an electrical engineer cook a hot dog? 1.5 A for 60 seconds! Taken at the E-Week open house put on by the engineering departments at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.”

Incredible Security Hacks

Max Cornelisse from the Netherlands has done some incredible hacks. He is a 24 year old science grad who likes to poke fun at how insecure some systems are. I guess they could be staged but most of them look very real. Let me know what you think… Anyone able to translate what is going on in the train video? Thanks to Rutger B. for sending in this translation.

Fan Case Mod

Do you hate loud PC cases as much as I do? In past years I have bought some cheap systems and always hated how loud they were. In most instances it was just poor quality fans that caused the problem. I wonder how long this Fan Case Mod would last sitting beside me? I don’t think it would look so pretty after 10 minutes… Via: Technabob
