Off Grid Generator uses Diesel and old Cooking Oil

Garygadget15 has a great idea that puts an old motor to use providing power by consuming waste cooling oil.

"I have built a "off the Grid" home generator using a 1950’s Coventry Victor one cylinder diesel generator, I can run this on diesel or a diesel and used cooking oil mixture and have it attached to a large battery via a 40amp car alternator which supplies my garden lighting and via an inverter for 600 watts of home power and lighting. The waste heat is used to keep my garage warm as well."

  1. Quiet! I’m glad he doesn’t live next-door to me.

  2. Maybe he’s deaf, that would explain the yellow flashing beacon, to remind him it’s runing!

  3. I knew a farmer who had a similar setup. With the barn door closed the generator sound was gone.

  4. I have a 3 cylinder diesel that is as quite as that… making 15kw. Much quieter than my neighbors propane unit making only half that power.

And i love the sound of those older single banger motors

  5. quiet then my fathers generator made in ussr

keep it up when the black oil will be gone we will go on oil

  6. My neighbours only worked out I had a genny in the garage when we had a power cut, I still had Lights and all they had was blaring house alarms (so still could not hear it banging!). And the yellow flashing light was what I used to test the 12 volt battery. So far I have used 2 gallons of old cooking oil and 3 of diesel and yes every time I wind it up and hear the old banger it puts a smile on my face, with the door closed you cannot hear it past the garden boundary unless it is very quiet and even then it’s not that noticeable, you could also check out my Electric Bike YouTube videos as that is saving me over £10 a week in fuel costs alone and has lost me a stone in weight. Well worth a go with today’s rising fuel costs….. soon to be fitted with the new LIFEPO4 battery with a range of 30 miles or more and will go an easy 20mph on battery alone or 30+ with me pedalling.
