Happy new year to you all! It has been a long time since we did a comment contest, I feel that it’s about time another commenter gets rewarded for participating.

Nuts and Volts is a fantastic electronic magazine with articles about new technology and great project ideas every month. Have a look at the article line up for January for examples of this. Hacked Gadgets is giving away a one year subscription to a lucky Hacked Gadgets reader. Entry into the contest is simple, just leave a comment for any article during the remainder of January 2009. Enter as many times as you want, just please don’t leave spam comments since these will be deleted as usual. The email address of the post will be used to identify and notify the lucky randomly selected winner. Please note that email addresses left when commenting is never made public.

  1. Well, I’ll start here. I’ve always wondered why I so rarely see awesome magazines like Nuts and Volts in public libraries. Mags about entertainment are welcome, but not so often the really cool informative publications.

    Anyone else notice that, or is it just local? I suppose the libraries are trying to please the largest number of people on a limited budget, but isn’t the whole point of a library to increase public access to knowledge?


  2. It might also depend on your library- For example, where I live, the libraries have quite a selection of movies and TV series on DVD… yet the libraries in another county nearby do not have this at all.
    I’d wager a lot of it depends on budget as well, and member requests- most libraries will listen to you if you request a new book/item they don’t have yet and it’s within budget.
    Oftentimes, they can get discounts on magazine subscriptions since they subscribe to so many.


  3. is the competition only open to people within the US or is it worldwide?


  4. My local librarys don’t have any magazines like this. Mostly Entertainment and some motorized sports.


  5. I’m confused as to the premise of this contest. are we supposed to comment on an article or give an idea for our own article or what??


  6. I have noticed the same thing with my local libraries, there are rarely any magazines that are electronic and I have never seen a Nuts and Volts in any of them. 🙁

    It is open to everyone (as long as Nuts and Volts can deliver it to you). If there is any issue about delivery I am sure we can come up with a suitable replacement prize. 🙂

  15. I have never seen this in the shops in England. I’m quite surprised they don’t make an international issue as I personally think there is a niche in the market for it here.

    I have followed some of their projects including the issue that tells you how to make a coil gun. Would love to win a years subscription though.

    Try college or university libraries. They often have more of the specifically targetted magazines than public libraries do.


  18. where i am from, the only gateway to such magazines is a paid dial up internet. never the less something is better than nothing.

    as for libraries, forget it man..


  19. Nuts & Volts is the only mag I subscribe to, best to get it in three year doses, cheaper that way. Hard to believe I need to renew soon.

  21. I live in hawaii and my local library has a pretty sparse electronics section but no magazines dedicated to the art of electricty, n e way I need that there subscription…. please, its like livin in a freakin third world country sometimes


  22. From what I see it resembles somewhat with the ‘elektor’ magazine we have here. But, since I don’t see the N&V here I really cannot comment on it.

  25. The closest I ever got to a decent tech magazine was finding Linux Journal (of all things!) at the local community college. Nuts and Volts would have been better.

    As VintagePC pointed out you can comment as many times as you want on any article from this article till the end of the month. Each comment is another entry.
